ROCK ART IMMERSIVE

The Rock Drawings in Valcamonica (Lombardy)
are the first Italian Unesco World Heritage Site

The Val Camonica in Northern Italy (near Lago d ́Iseo) is home to the largest collection of rock engravings in Europe.
Between 8000 AC and 300 BC, an estimated 200.000 engravings have been made on rocks polished by the ice age galciers.
The engravings present a large variety of topics like animals, flowers, human figures, storage houses, weapons and mythological Icons.
Over 8000 years people from the stone age, bronce age and iron age cultures have described their life and myths.
The present people from Val Camonica named the engravings „Pitoti“ (small figures).
However, the incisions are difficult to discover due to the wide spread hilly landscape,
often difficult to access and explore, and due to complicated light/shadow constellations.

3D-Fotographic campaign and digitalisation

High resolution digitalisation of the engravings has not been undertaken to so far.
Advanced 3D-fotographic technologies are required to obtain optimal digitalization results (independent of light conditions) and to permit image reconstructions, segmentation and animations.
This innovative project has the objective to generate a collection of high resolution digital documentation of the drawings that will allow to use for different aims (e.g. research, mediation).

Bringing Ancient Stories to Life:
An Immersive Journey into Camunian Culture

We are developing a series of immersive multimedia experiences centered on the Pitoti Rock Art—unique prehistoric engravings that offer a window into the life, beliefs, and myths of the ancient Camunian people of Val Camonica.
Our goal is to create powerful new ways for audiences to engage with this extraordinary cultural heritage, through cutting-edge technology and storytelling. To achieve this, the project will unfold in several key phases:

High-Resolution 3D Imaging: Capturing the rock art in exquisite detail using state-of-the-art 3D photographic techniques.

Digital Extraction and Analysis: Applying advanced image processing tools to isolate and interpret individual figures and motifs.

Creative Development: Designing an immersive narrative experience that brings to life the daily lives, rituals, and myths of the Camunian people.

Public Presentation: Showcasing the immersive experience at venues in Val Camonica and throughout Italy and Europe, with the twin goals of attracting cultural tourism and promoting awareness of this UNESCO World Heritage treasure.

We invite partners, sponsors, and cultural institutions to support this innovative initiative and
help us make ancient voices heard in a new, unforgettable way.
